Sevilay is known for discussing the topics of today’s society in photography series. Through her camera lens, she draws focus to the stories that often stay unheard. Her wet-plate portraits combine modern-day issues with a historical photography technique. But her portfolio includes many formats: instant photography – collodion wet plates and polaroid – as well as digital.
Regardless of the format, the brief or the style of a shoot, Sevilay’s striking signature draws the viewer in. In both her commercial work and her series, her photos come alive through the use of rich colours and expressive composition. She connects with the portrayed to find the unique beauty within them. To create a strong connection with the future audience by doing so.
Sevilay Maria likes working in a team, as she did in her personal projects #MYOWNGENDER and PR:OUD. She firmly believes that things only get better when different ideas come together. Besides working on her own series, Sevilay has photographed for Volkskrant, PS Het Parool, Het Parool, ID Magazine and printed magazines. She dreams of welding art with commerce even further in the future.
Besides addressing social issues in her personal projects, she’s currently leading a research on finding a bio-based alternative for the hazardous materials used for collodion wet-plating.
