Hi, I am Thijmen van der Steen, a Dutch designer based in Amsterdam.
In my work, I aim to make products and objects more light; to strip down form and material and to eliminate overabundance, so that only the necessary elements remain. I find basic things most beautiful and powerful.
Transparency and weight are important elements in my work. The Floating Light for example is a lightweighted and understandable object. All parts are visible and ‘floating’ like an exploded view of a drawing.
I put great effort in doing profound research, and in making sketches, drawings and samples, as I consider this essential to provide products of good quality. A considerable part of the objects are made by hand, here in my atelier.
